Doctor of Ecological Building Practices (D.EBP)

Built environment professionals face numerous challenges and opportunities in relation to the changes in practice that are associated with environmental change.
This doctoral research degree offers the opportunity to explore and develop practice based research in relation to environmental issues. It is open to those working in the built environment professions of architecture, building and construction, planning, development and engineering, as well as in product, industrial and manufacturing design.
The Professional Doctorate is validated by the University of Wales and is managed and delivered in collaborative provision between the Graduate School for the Environment and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) School of Art & Design (CSAD).
Aims
- The degree recognises a contribution at doctoral level to professional knowledge, products or processes.
- It is aimed at professionals interested in examining how practice and environmental change may be related
- It is particularly suited to industry and practice-based candidates who wish to integrate work-based projects with completion of a doctoral degree.
The programme content
The programme allows practitioners to carry out in-depth research on work based problems, challenges and interests while learning and practicing the doctoral research skills that will be required to advance knowledge in the relevant field.
The programme content varies depending on the research projects of each candidate, but will always be based around the modules. A list of current research projects may be found here.
Modules
The programme commences with two modules that enable candidates to develop a detailed research proposal and plan before proceeding to the ‘D’ level modules.
Each module includes seminars, lectures, workshops, tutorials, presentations and other research events at CAT and UWIC, with a dedicated virtual learning environment to support candidates throughout. The programme description may be found via the link at the end of this webpage.
The Professional Doctorate is based largely in practice, with short attendance periods at either CAT or UWIC.
Methods of assessment
Work is continually assessed by the programme team and, on completion, by external examiners.
