Background
Following research at the University of Accra, Ghana, Joan was Head of Sociology at a High School in Worcestershire and an examiner for the Southern Examination Board before moving to work at the Centre for Alternative Technology in 1982. She originally job shared the position of Education Officer and helped develop the Schools Education programme including day and residential visits for school groups and the teacher educational programme. During this period she worked with Damian Randle to realise the unique Eco Cabins project.
In 1994 Joan became Short Course Coordinator and developed the large range of short courses offered to the general public. In 2001 Joan became Course Director and then Head of Quality and Support and worked on a collaboration with the University of East London to offer CAT's first postgraduate programme MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies. This led to the establishment of the Graduate School of the Environment in 2007 and the development of further post graduate study and research programmes. 2010 saw the culmination of 10 years of development work with the opening of the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education.
