The Prince of Wales visits CAT to view student work and meet lecturers
Prince Charles visited the Centre for Alternative Technology to tour the WISE building, speak to lecturers and view student work. In CAT's new Wales Institute for Sustainable Education he met Trish Andrews who showed him work completed by students on CAT's sustainable architecture course.
"He was really interested in our students’ projects and was impressed by the ingenuity they’re displaying in developing eco building solutions’. HRH paid particular interest in former student Jonathan Marrion, whose final thesis concentrated on the ‘Cider Research Institute’. He was impressed with Jonathan's vision in how using resources such as the water network, tidal range, gravity and aeroponic growing techniques it will be possible to produce cider in a post peak oil society."
The prince was shown some of many sustainable features of the WISE building, including walls made out of earth from a local quarry. The prince also spoke to Peter Harper, Research Director at CAT, about thechallenges of moving towards a low carbon society.
Paul Allen, who escorted the prince on his visit to CAT, said: "This visit went very smoothly. He seemed very interested in the architecture of the WISE building and in the student projects. Design and architecture are obviously issues he's interested in and speaks about a lot. We were very pleased to be able to show him an example of sustainable architecture, and we hope he has been inspired by it"
